Do you need a car?
Not for a single-resort holiday. Transfers and tours will move you around, and the big resorts are walkable. But if you want to hop between towns, reach the western cliffs or the inland hills, or simply chase quiet beaches, a car pays for itself in freedom. Visitors driving in from Spain or Lisbon usually keep theirs. A useful middle path is to skip the car for the first few beach days and hire one for just two or three days of exploring.
Renting at Faro
The airport has all the major hire firms and many local ones, and cars are relatively cheap outside peak season. Book ahead in summer, read the fuel and insurance terms closely, and photograph the car at pickup. A small car is plenty for two; families want the extra boot space.
Tolls, fuel and parking
The A22 (Via do Infante) motorway uses electronic tolls with no booths, so arrange a toll device or pre-registration with your hire firm to avoid fines — or take the toll-free N125 coast road if you are in no rush. Fuel is sold by the litre at Portuguese prices, and town-centre parking is tight in summer; aim for edge-of-town car parks and walk in. The cliff-cove beaches often have only small, free car parks that fill by mid-morning, so an early start beats circling for a space.
Getting around without a car
You can enjoy the Algarve car-free from a well-connected base. A single railway line, the Linha do Algarve, runs the coast from Lagos through Portimão, Albufeira and Faro to Tavira and the Spanish border, cheap and scenic if slow. Regional buses link the main towns. Neither is fast, so base yourself somewhere central like Albufeira if you plan to rely on them. For beaches off the transport map, local taxis, ride apps and organised tours do the rest — and many boat trips include hotel pickup.
