The shoulder-season sweet spot

May, June, September and early October are the smart months: warm sea, comfortable sun, thinner crowds and noticeably lower prices than the peak. Winter is mild and quiet, ideal for golf, walking and the inland hills, while high summer buys you the hottest, liveliest, most expensive version of the coast. One quirk worth knowing: the sea is at its warmest in September, not August, because the water lags the air — so early autumn often gives the best swimming of the whole year, with half the crowds. Timing your trip also decides the price of almost everything — see what an Algarve trip costs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest time to visit the Algarve?

The cheapest months are November to March. For the best balance of warmth, value and low crowds, the shoulder season — May, June, September and early October — is unbeatable.

When is the sea warmest in the Algarve?

September, not August — the water lags the air, so early autumn gives the warmest swimming of the year, with far fewer people than mid-summer.

Is the Algarve good in winter?

Yes — winter is mild and quiet, and the best season for golf, walking and the inland hills. Prices are at their lowest, though some beach restaurants close.
